Dr Mohamed Patel is a dedicated General Surgeon who has recently joined Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt on a part-time basis while continuing his work in state healthcare and academia. His commitment to both clinical practice and medical education reflects his passion for advancing surgical care and training the next generation of surgeons.
Dr Patel’s interest in medicine began at a young age, driven by a deep desire to help those in need. As his high school education progressed, his fascination with life sciences solidified his decision to pursue a career in medicine. During his medical studies, he was drawn to surgery, and this interest was further reinforced during his internship, where he was captivated by the wide range of surgical conditions and procedures.
He completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) at the University of Cape Town in 2012. His postgraduate journey led him to specialize in General Surgery, obtaining his Fellowship of the College of Surgeons (FCS SA) in 2023, followed by a Master of Medicine (MMed Surgery) from Stellenbosch University in 2024. His clinical expertise spans a broad range of surgical interventions, including trauma surgery, breast pathology, and minimally invasive procedures such as laparoscopic hernia repairs.
Dr Patel has extensive experience in both state and private healthcare settings. He completed his registrar training at Tygerberg Hospital and Stellenbosch University, gaining exposure to complex surgical cases and refining his technical expertise. His professional journey has also included roles at Khayelitsha District Hospital, where he worked as a Medical Officer in both General Surgery and Emergency Medicine.
Beyond his clinical practice, Dr Patel has a keen interest in research and education. He has published in leading medical journals and has presented his work at national and international surgical conferences. His research contributions have focused on trauma surgery, thyroid cancer, and the use of advanced imaging techniques in surgical management. Passionate about mentoring young doctors, he actively participates in teaching medical students and surgical trainees, ensuring that his knowledge and experience are passed on to future healthcare professionals.
While deeply committed to his profession, Dr Patel also values work-life balance. He is married to a fellow General Surgeon specializing in breast and endocrine surgery, and together they are raising their young son. He treasures quality time with family and friends. Coming from a sporting background, he is now a keen spectator, particularly enjoying cricket.
